Bonsai pots made for your tree

I make handbuilt ceramic pots that respond to a particular tree: the movement of its trunk, the way its branches fall, and the things you notice after living with it.

A commission gives us time to look at those things together. You bring the tree and its story; I bring my way of working in clay.

From the tree to the clay

Before I build, I draw. I am looking for a form that works with the tree and gives it the planting space it needs. We discuss the sketch, then I make a test tile so you can see the clay, colors, and surface I plan to use.

I often send a full-size paper template so you can check how your tree will fit the proposed shape and size.

Once we agree on a direction, I build. The interior follows the measurements we have agreed on; the exterior needs room to develop as I work in clay.

For a larger pot, I may make a prototype first. For a smaller pot, I may make several versions for you to choose from. You pay for one finished pot.

How it works

Spend some time with my work before you get in touch. I make sculptural pots with layered surfaces and openings that become part of the planting. We will agree on the practical needs and a direction together, then I need room to make decisions as I work in clay.

Start with a conversation

You’ll send photos from a few angles and share the tree’s species and history, approximate dimensions, and any repotting deadline. A short Zoom call helps me get to know your tree and what you hope for in a pot. We can talk through root space, drainage, and tie-down holes.

Sketch, test, and build

We will discuss the sketch and test tile before I build. Depending on the size and construction, I may make a prototype first or several versions for you to choose from. We will agree on that approach before work begins. The commission is for one finished pot unless we agree otherwise.

I will share progress photos as the form and surface develop through making and firing.

The practical details

Price and payment

Each commission is quoted individually. Design and making are billed at $45 per hour, including materials, glaze, and firing. As a guide, allow approximately:

  • Small, 6–9 inches: $200–$375

  • Medium, 9–12 inches: $275–$450

  • Large, 13–18 inches: $350–$550

  • Extra large, 18 inches and up: from $450

Sizes refer to the pot’s longest side. These are approximate ranges for design and making; complex forms or extensive prototyping may cost more. Shipping is additional.

Before work begins, we will put the scope, maximum price, payment stages, and completion date in writing. I will discuss the deposit with you personally. An inquiry does not reserve a space or commit either of us.

Eight weeks, then shipping

Allow eight weeks from acceptance until your pot is ready to ship. We will confirm the start date and payment to begin together. Delivery time is additional. You pay for shipping; I will confirm the cost. The remaining balance and shipping are due before I send the pot.

Availability and changes

I have limited availability for commissions; inquire, and if I am fully booked, we can discuss a later start or a waiting list. I may decline a project if I do not think my work is the right fit.

Our agreement will explain cancellations and what happens if work needs to stop. Bespoke pots cannot be returned for a change of mind. If your pot arrives damaged or there is a problem with the agreed work, contact me so we can address it.
