This series comes from the tangled vines at the edge of the Huron River, seen while floating along in a canoe. Bare branches balance over the bank, twisting and reflecting in the water. They feel strong and direct, but also delicate, ornate, and full of movement.
This version are small shohin sized pots, roughly 4.75x5.5X4" tall, with an interior that is 1.75” deep.
They are double-walled planters. Cutout, lattice-like forms make up the outer walls and feet, while the interior holds a protected space for a succulent or small tree. Layers of underglaze washes and glaze build up the surface, adding depth and variation.
These are handbuilt ceramic vessels, built through layered surface and carved texture. These pieces function as both sculptural object and planters. Suitable for bonsai, succulents, and small plant compositions, with proportions that work well for smaller trees or more expressive plantings. Each piece is made individually, with an emphasis on surface, structure, and variation. While they are fully functional, they are not production objects—no two are the same, and each one reflects a moment in process and material.
