By the Water

By the Water ceramic planter with branch-shaped cutouts, imagined with a Chinese elm bonsai.

Imagined with a Chinese Elm

This series started in a canoe on the Huron River. I was drawn to the tangled bare vines at the edge of the water. They balanced over the bank, twisting and reflecting below, and looked strong and delicate at the same time.

Those tangles became the outer walls and feet of these planters. The cutouts leave them open, with a second wall inside to hold a succulent or small tree. I layer underglaze washes and glaze over the surfaces, building up color and depth.
